Joze Ciuha: Secrets of the Mediterranean

19.4.–7.6.2016

From Mid-April the Gallery Thalberg invites the visitor to a discovery tour through the late oeuvre of the Slovenian artist Joze Ciuha. The expressive and fauvist pieces of the artist, who recently passed away, drag the observers into an enchanted and mediterranean world.

Already during his studies at the university in Ljubljana Joze Ciuha travelled through Europe and the Middle East. He lived mainly as an independent artist and visited during his creative years many places around the globe. This multicultural influence from Paris, Macedonia, Myanmar, Bangladesh and South America can be observed in his late works.

The exhibited pieces only show a small part of Ciuhas large oeuvre. He created the paintings mainly during the last decade of the 20th century, while living on the Croatian island of Sipan.

Ciuha himself said the following about the island: “Similar to Paris, Sipan never ceases to be a source of enrichment for me. And right here I realize again and again, how important it is, to have an island for one’s own: if not in the quietness of the coast of the sea, then at least in one’s inner self.”

The enthusiasm for cultures, the calm of nature and not least his great artistry wrap the exhibited objects with an aura of enchantment of the Mediterranean Sea.
